Friday Faves: Sept. 4, 2020 Edition
Friday Faves
Sept. 4, 2020
I have been wanting to find a way to share some of the content I come across in a more in depth way than an IG story, so I thought I’d try pulling them together in a newsletter style. Let’s see where this can go! Heading into the long weekend, we get one extra day to sit and do whatever we want! For me that means one extra day to turn my phone off, find a comfy chair and read. I’m really looking forward to finishing a couple books I’ve had started for some time now. In Denver we are looking down the barrel of a hot and sunny weekend, followed by snow on Tuesday, so I imagine I’ll make some iced tea and sit on my patio one last time before soup season. Enough, let’s dive in!
Read
The Warmth of Other Suns, by Isabel Wilkerson. I got this book as a birthday gift and absolutely love it. About the migration of Black citizens from the south from 1915 - 1975, this book should be required reading. I’m learning so much that I missed in history class, and it’s written as narrative nonfiction, so seems more like a story than a history class. Recommend for sure.
The Guest List by Lucy Foley. Also a gift, this book is a fun thriller/mystery book about a murder at a wedding on a remote island off the coast of Ireland. Told from the perspective of different guests, you quickly figure out everyone has secrets, and thus a motive. Definitely a great light choice to balance out other heavy reads.
We Didn’t Want to Co-Parent a Puppy by Chloe Caldwell, in the NY Times. This article talks about how a pandemic puppy wormed her way into a split family dynamic. What I loved about it was the way the puppy was an antidote for anxiety for a young girl, and the poignant observation that when growing up in a divorced family, there is no “home”, only Mom’s house and Dad’s house.
Listen
folklore by Taylor Swift. This album has been my go-to since it was released. Something about it feels soothing and inspiring at the same time. The vocals on exile with Bon Iver give me chills.

Jon Davis the eponymous EP by a fellow CA alumnus, Jon Davis. His voice! My favorite song is The Only One Around, excellent guitar. Great pop album, really looking forward to the full release!

Watch
I’ll admit - both of these shows came to me via a good friend, and friends, let me tell you, Erika Mori has excellent taste in comedic television and film.
The Great - A HILARIOUS satirical comedy based (loosely) on Catherine the Great and her marriage to Peter and her plot to kill him and stage a coup. It had me laughing and wanting to take shots of vodka, slamming the glasses to the floor and shouting “Huzzah!”. Season 2 has been confirmed! Streaming on Hulu.
Teenage Bounty Hunters - A smart comedy about two twin teenage girls living in the south, who wander into careers as part time bounty hunters. Both sisters are endearing, the acting is amazing, and the show tackles some pretty big issues in a really well done way. You won’t regret this one! Still waiting to hear if Season 2 is coming. Pray that it will renewed! Steaming on Netflix.
Eat
Mathilde's Tomato Tart - A Smitten Kitchen recipe based off a meal described in a lovely book I read in July called The Margot Affair by Sanaë Lemoine (this is a fantastic book, read it!). The summer tomato season is almost over here in Denver, so I wanted to take advantage while I could for a light and delicious supper. It was SO GOOD. I suggest making it with a simple green salad (Mathilde’s as well) - recipe posted below.
